library-lootLibrary Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by myself and Marg that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!

Wow – did you take a trolley to pick up all those hefty books. I am very impressed. There was me just picking up two rather
thin ones today as I didn’t want to carry them all home after deciding to leave the car at home, to get some exercise. I now need to add a few of those books to my TBR list – oh boy! Glad my TBR list is just a name and a title in a book and not actually holding all the books.
Enjoy all of them and I can’t wait to hear more about them. Well done on your vlog.

  2. September 9, 2009 6:23 am

I’m Looking Through You sounds like such a fabulous book. I’m really looking forward to that one.

  3. September 9, 2009 6:29 am

A Northern Light is a wonderful book. You really have a nice assortment there!!

  4. September 9, 2009 6:43 am

I’ve had my eye on that Virginia Woolf bio you mentioned. It just happens to be in my library. There’s no rhyme or reason to that place, which is the main reason I love it so.

As always, you gave me some good ideas for the wishlist.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover…I feel a lot of affection for that novel. I like to read it ever so often.

  5. September 9, 2009 6:52 am

You did get carried away this week! Happy reading!

  6. September 9, 2009 8:07 am

Fledgling was interesting…can’t wait to hear your thoughts on that one!

  7. September 9, 2009 9:34 am

Reading some of your favorite authors is a sure cure for crankiness. :-) Several of the books you brought home from the library sound really good. I hope you enjoy them!

  8. September 9, 2009 9:43 am

You’ve really got me wishing I wasn’t already in the middle of 8 other books here…I so want to go pull Fledgling off the shelf now!!!!!!! And I’m really curious to hear what you think of Leaving Atlanta. I’d never heard of that one before, but it sounds like something I might really like.
BTW, I love your hair like that!

  9. September 9, 2009 12:05 pm

:D Always fun to see your vlogs…and yes! You must read Fingersmith now!! I need to read more de Lint Newford books…I just picked up Yarrow from the library..not sure if it’s a Newford book or not, but it sounds good!

  10. September 9, 2009 12:19 pm

Yummy books once again, Eva! There are several here that I have on my stacks or my wishlist. I need to go back and watch your vlog again because I REALLY want the title of the one about the woman growing up in a haunted house. Fun stuff!

I have lots of friends who have raved about Art of the Personal Essay, so definitely enjoy that one.

  11. September 9, 2009 1:05 pm

I loved The London Scene and wrote about it here:

    http://lettersfromahillfarm.blogspot.com/2009/01/london-scene-by-virginia-woolf.html

    Great video!

  12. September 9, 2009 1:18 pm

I’m with vivienne – how did you get all those books out of the library?!!! Do you bring a cart?!! :–) You got some great books, and I love your vlogs – they’re so fun!

  13. September 9, 2009 1:53 pm

I read The Art of the Personal Essay for my college course in essays. I really enjoy it. I should go and browse through it at my own pace now!

  14. September 9, 2009 2:13 pm

That must be the perfect loot! :) I did not know of that collection of Woolf’s essays. I simply had to reserve it from the library as soon as I saw it on your vlog. Also, both A Time of Angels and A Northern Light sound really interesting. Fingersmith is not my favorite among the novels by Sarah Waters, but it is a great story non the less, I would describe it as somewhat Dickensian with a modern twist. There’s also a quality mini series by BBC available on DVD that you might want to watch after reading the book.

    Greetings,
    Tiina

  15. September 9, 2009 3:33 pm

Vivienne, actually I fit them all in my library bag! It wasn’t fun lugging them to the car (I was totally listing), but it wasn’t that long of a walk!

Amanda, another book blogger already reviewed it and enjoyed it. ;)

    Staci, thanks!

Bybee, Hermione Lee also did a bio of Edith Wharton that I want to read soon! I didn’t know you were a fan of Lady Chatterley’s Lover-I’m even more curious about it now!

    BermudaOnion, thanks!

    Softdrink, I loved it. :D

Literary Feline, that’s what favourite authors are for! :)

Debi, do it! Fledgling is a fast read! I promise! And thanks so much for hair compliment; after Disastrous Hair Cut, I’ve been playing with it a lot to find styles that I like.

Chris, at this rate, I’ll be out of Sarah Waters by the end of the year! She better start right more quickly. :)

    Andi, it’s I’m Looking Through You. :D

Nan, thanks for the compliment and for the link!

Rhapsody, lol-thanks! Next vlog, I shall display my library bag.

Rebecca, I liked how it was both chronologically and geographically diverse, so I can’t wait to start some of the essays. :)

Tiina, so we’ll be reading it together! :) I ended up abandoning A Northern Light around page 150; it just wasn’t capturing my attention. That’s interesting you say that about Fingersmith-it seems like everyone else calls it their favourite!

  16. September 9, 2009 5:18 pm

Wow, that’s quite a pile you got! I’ve only read two of those. I enjoyed Wicked Lovely. Have you read Chris’ review (Stuff as Dreams)? He had some interesting thoughts.

A Pale View of Hills is the other one I’ve read and I have to admit I didn’t like it. That’s one I managed to check out from my library, though, thank goodness. You found some good titles for the RIP IV.

  17. September 9, 2009 5:54 pm

Wow, you’ve a nice haul there! Enjoy your books! I look forward to reading your reviews.

  18. September 9, 2009 6:53 pm

I’ve got Wicked Lovely checked out from the library as well and I’m really looking forward to reading it. Haunted Ground looks really good as well…as always, I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on these.

  19. September 9, 2009 7:25 pm

    Hi Eva,
I read Wicked Lovely a while back and really enjoyed it. I always wanted to read A Northern Light. I hope you like it.

  20. September 10, 2009 4:52 am

You got great novels this time! I love Ishiguro, and while A Pale View of Hills isn’t my favorite of his, reading anything by him is guaranteed to be amazing. I’m a little scared of D.H. Lawrence myself and the fact that I have an omnibus edition of three of his works hasn’t made me eager to read him yet. I can’t buy books anymore though, so I’m sure I’ll get to it!

Also, your hair is adorable in this vlog! I wish I could come up with such cute styles for my own hair.

  21. September 10, 2009 5:01 am

These all look good! I’m really interested in The Art of the Personal Essay…wonder if my library has it…

  22. September 10, 2009 9:30 am

I’ve never been able to get into Lawrence though I’ve read three of his novels. Lady Chatterly’s Lover is a good story but I didn’t enjoy it as much because I don’t like Lawrence’s style.

Memory & Dream – That’s the second time this week I’ve heard him mentioned. My friend’s a huge fan of Charles de Lint. Maybe I’ll give him a go. :)

I remember the Tipping the Velvet TV series. If I saw the book, I’d definitely pick it up.

  23. September 10, 2009 9:56 am

Nancy, I’ve actually already read Wicked Lovely-this is a reread. :) And Chris and I have been e-mailing back and forth about his post! I’ve read A Pale View of Hills and I loved it, but I’m an Ishiguro fan!

    Melody, thanks. :)

Samantha, I hope you love Wicked Lovely-I did when I read it the first time! Doesn’t Haunted Ground have a pretty cover?

Christine, I loved Wicked Lovely-this is a reread for me! :) I actually ended up abandoning A Northern Light around page 150-it just wasn’t holding my interst. :/ But I’m in the definite minority.

Meghan, yay for another Ishiguro fan!!! And I’m glad I’m not the only one intimidated by Lawrence. :) Thanks so much for the hair compliment! It was pretty easy-just 1″ curling iron and lots of time. Was watching Bleak House adapation, lol, so I coveted the actress’ sausage curls!

Pam, I hope you library does. :)

Ceri, if you try de Lint, start with The Little Country. It’s a standalone, but very much de Lint flavour, and so good! You should definitely read Tipping the Velvet!

Talk about challenging social mores, be prepared for Fledgling. Some Butler fans were less than happy with the editing on the author’s final book but despite that misgiving, a chilling, disturbing read. Towards the end it loss some of its punch for me but after the graphic, bone chilling opening and Butler’s habit of challenging the reader to critically re-examine or moral and social wiring, maybe the closing was a gift. I participated in a group discussion on this one. To date, it was the most engage, most participated book discussion I’ve ever been in. Can’t wait to hear what you think.

Some great books that I’ve read and some intriging ones that I haven’t in that selection. The London Sene is particularly wonderful – you will definitely be transported!

  26. September 10, 2009 2:29 pm

I’ve heard lots about Wicked Lovely and keep forgetting to add it to my TBR list. Maybe I’ll actually go to the library and borrow it :-)

I’ve tagged you here for some ABC’s, if you have the time go check it out.

  27. September 10, 2009 3:48 pm

Great vlog, Eva, and wow did you ever borrow a lot of books! Most of them sound great to me (with the exception of Lawrence, whom I loathe, although I haven’t read this one).

  28. September 10, 2009 10:39 pm

You must have a HUGE library bag! I try to limit myself to a few library books at a time because I have so many at home still to read!

  29. September 11, 2009 9:43 am

Oh Eva, once again, a Library Loot that both awes and inspires! I have to get myself down to the library later today and get some of my own!

  30. September 11, 2009 7:10 pm

Yay, you got FINGERSMITH! I hope you enjoy it.

I’ve seen a lot of people mentioning MEMORY AND DREAM lately. Every time I catch sight of the title, I think somebody’s talking about me. The perils of having a name that’s also a regular word. :)

  31. September 12, 2009 3:42 pm

It looks like you had a great week at the library. I went a little out of control myself :)

I’ve been meaning to read Octavia Butler, but I don’t really know where to begin. So I look forward to reading your review.

I read Lady Chatterley’s Lover this past summer and really enjoyed it. I just love discovering that ‘intimidating’ authors aren’t really intimidating. That’s why I keep challenging myself to pick up classics.

Fingersmith is one I’ve picked up this week as well.

  32. September 14, 2009 10:11 am

Just did our Library Loot post for this week! Have some great books checked out, can’t wait to read them. To see our loot visit:

Holy library loot, Eva!! I look forward to your review of Fledgling–I love Octavia Butler’s work…

  34. September 17, 2009 4:20 pm

Susan, I really loved it! I thought it was the first in a trilogy, though, so now I’m sad. :( I bet a group discussion would be awesome!

Fleurfisher, I’m planning on picking up The London Scene very soon. :)

Jackie, Wicked Lovely is wonderful-go read it!

AvisannsChild, thanks! And yeah-I have no self control around the library. ;)

Felicia, it’s pretty big-and I’m a good packer! I’ll show it in a vlog soon!

    Olduvai, thank you!

Memory, lol-I can imagine that’d be frustrating! I’m sure I’ll enjoy Fingersmith-it’s by Waters! :)

Becky, yay for out of control library piles! lol

Drey, LMAO! I loved it too-this was only my second Butler (read Kindred a few years ago)
