Library Loot: February 11-17, 2009
Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by myself and Alessandra that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!
Here’s my loot for the week:
Bad Samaritans by Ha-Joon Chang (for the World Citizen Challenge), Blonde Roots by Bernardine Evaristo (for Black History Month), Belfast Diary by John Conroy (for the World Citizen Challenge)
Bloomability by Sharon Creech (I was in a YA mood), The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan (for the Science Book Challenge), Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson (for Black History Month)
The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswany (for the What’s in a Name? Challenge), The Hummingbird’s Daughter by Luis Alberto Urea (for the Latin American Exploration Challenge), Trap for Cinderella by Sebastien Japrisot (for the Lost in Translation Challenge)
Fun Home by Alison Bechdel (for the Dewey’s Books Challenge), The Saturdays by Elizabeth Enright (for the Dewey’s Books Challenge), The Girl in the Castle in the Museum by Kate Bernheimer and Nicoletta Ceccoli (because of Nymeth’s Review: it’s for my niece, who’s visiting)
The Seance by John Harwood (because I loved his first novel), Shop Your Closet by Melanie Charlton Fascitelli (if you saw my closet you’d understand), No Name by Wilkie Collins
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder (for the World Citizen Challenge), The United States Constituion: A Graphic Adaptation by Jonathan Hennessey and Aaron McConnell (thanks to Debi’s review and Obama’s chapter on the Constituion in The Audacity of Hope)
That’s a lot of books, right? But before you start judging me, realise that I’ve already read seven, and I’m working on an eighth! ;) A lot of them were ‘lighter’ reads: either short, or YA, or both.
Want to play along?
That is an amazing haul and a lovely array of covers. You have to grab those books when you see them – I’ve not taken books, regretted it and then had to wait months for them to reappear far too many times. “No Name” is the only one of your books I have read, and it is wonderful!
Holy cow! You must be one fast reader!
I’m so excited to be playing along! However my lil’ list is sad compared to your mammoth-sized stack!! LOL I bow to you! Thanks for hosting!!
Judge you…ha! No, I was actually thinking…”She’s going to have to get back to that library mighty soon, because she’s going to have the rest of those knocked out in no time!”
Can’t wait to see what you think about Bad Samaritans…sounds like one I might like to try if it’s not too “above my head”!
Quite the variety. I really want to read The Hummingbird’s Daughter. I’ll watch for your review. I’ll have to look into The Yacoubian Building too.
What a great haul! I can’t wait to read your thoughts on Fun Home. I have The Saturdays waiting for me at the library also!
It looks like you got a good haul. I really gotta get to my library. Who am I kidding, I really gotta get back to my books and up the reading!
Wow, it looks like you got some really good ones! I’m jealous as I’m forcing myself not to step into the library until I finish a few that I already have checked out. I’ll look forward to your reviews for sure :)
Great library loot! I’m not going to the library this week because I have a ton of library books that I’ve renewed and still haven’t read. Maybe next week I’ll get to participate.
Wow, that’s a ton of books! I want to read The Seance… I went to the library yesterday but only got three books. I’ll try to list them tonight (I’m still waiting on two, so it will eventually be five…)
I read Mountains Beyond Mountains a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I’ll be looking forward to your review of it!
I’m excited to hear what you think of Kate Bernheimer’s book!
Of those the only one I have read is The Hummingbird’s Daughter, which I thought was excellent.
I read Fun House last week, a really great graphic novel. Gorgeous selection of books as usual
I enjoyed The Seance! Happy reading.
I loved Fun Home, and I’ve heard that The Botany of Desire is a terrific read!
ha! You KNOW which one I’m excited to see!
You cannot go wrong with Jacqueline Woodson.
Oh, I’ve read nearly all Sebastien Japrisot’s novels (that have been translated anyway)–Love him! I hope you enjoy him as well–this one is very noir-ish! Now I feel like rereading his books…Lots of goodies there. I’m envious you’re reading No Name–would love to read Wilkie Collins, but I can’t take on another long book at the moment.
FleurFisher, I’m definitely enjoying No Name!
Bermuda Onion, a lot of these books are short. ;)
Lisa, glad to have you playing along!
Debi, hehe; you make me laugh. :)
Sandra, The Yacoubian Building was really good!
Vasilly, I just finished Fun Home-it was great!
Nik, it’s weird how my reading goes through phases; sometimes I read all the time, sometimes barely at all.
Samantha, I can never keep myself from the library! :)
Alyce, thanks! Hope to see you playing next week. :)
Daphne, I’m very excited about The Seance!
Jeska, I’m glad you enjoyed it-that makes me more excited. :)
Lena, I can’t wait to read it with my niece! :D
Marg, great!
Katrina, it was a great graphic novel. :)
Katherine, I’m glad!
Antipodean Owl, that’s great-I haven’t actually heard much about The Botany of Desire.
Care, hehe!
Susan, I really enjoyed it. :)
Danielle, I loved this one a lot more than my first book with him!
How on earth did you carry all of those???
I really want to read the Seance. Isn’t The Girl in the Castle….beautiful! I borrowed that one for my daughter a while back.
Ooh, I’m jealous of your selection! Looks like some good ones. I’ve heard good things about Jacqueline Woodson lately, I think I’ll have to read something of hers.
My daughter loved ‘The Girl in the Castle in the Museum’— a gorgeous picture book!
Great-looking list. Some might make it into a future loot bag at my house… Thanks for continuing to host this!
I added Girl in the Castle in the Museum and Shop Your Closet to my TBR. Thanks!
