My Book Blogging Manifesto
April 20, 2010
I feel like having a Book Blogger! *fist air pump* kind of day. And y’all know I love lists. So here’s my list of what I, as the book blogger that runs A Striped Armchair, like to do with my little bit of the internet:
- I seek out books…making lists on random topics, checking titles out from the library, and reviewing them in the good and the bad. I prioritise my main interests in fiction: older books, an equal POC/white author balance, and a good dose of literature in translation and other international books (since England colonised a good percentage of the world, I don’t have to read translated fiction in order to hear the voices of authors from all different continents). And I enjoy a wide variety of nonfiction!
- I gush about the books and authors I adore, in the hopes that I can convince other readers to give them a try. And I analyse the less gushworthy books, so that I have a reading record for my future self.
- I post about whatever I feel like, even if it’s not entirely book-ish. And I skip posting whenever I’m not in the mood for it.
- I express my opinion as I see fit, even at the risk of ruffling some hypothetical feathers. I find that debate, as long as it’s kept on an intellectual level, is invigorating and healthy. Every time I’ve blogged about a controversial topic here, I’ve been more than impressed with the caliber of discussion that takes place in the comments section. I don’t apologise for having a point of view, even if it is different from others.
- I am close with other book bloggers from all walks of life, and chat with them via Twitter, e-mails, blog comments, and any other medium. I value these relationships, and I am grateful to the evolution of social media for making them even easier to create and maintain.
- I shape my personal blogosphere, reaching out to bloggers old and new who can brighten my day with a new post in my reader, and who I connect with at some level, intellectually, personally, or otherwise. And I delight in new (or simply new-to-me) blogs that I stumble across and feel a reading connection with, as well as watching the evolution of bloggers I’ve known for years.
- I offer advice and mentoring to anyone new to book blogging who asks for it.
- I join in a wide range of challenges, read-a-longs, and community-sponsored events to help me celebrate the joy of reading or explore new-to-me genres or just have a reason to create yet another book list.
- I believe in both reading and blogging relativism…there is no one right way to do anything, especially in two such individualistic hobbies.
- I receive joy and enrichment every single day from being a member of the book blogging community.
If ten was good enough for Moses, it’s good enough for me! ;) And now, I believe I might have suddenly broken out of my reading slump. I’m aching to curl up with a book for the first time in over a week. So I’m off to take advantage of that!

You are a joy, Eva! Keep being you!
Thanks Linda! :)
Love the manifesto. It’s great! Fantastic way to look at the way you have fun with your blog. Ohhh Neil Gaiman *loses thread of thought*
I often lose my train of thought at that picture too! ;)
Love it! Hurrah for manifestos!
They’re great fun! :D
I love your lists! This one really makes me want to go have a book blogger day too, perhaps when I get home this weekend :) I agree with Linda though, keep being you!
I look forward to your book blogger day! :D
Great list! I love being part of the community too!
Thanks!
I love the new header pic!
I also love what you said here. Your personality really comes through in this post. I love to come here and visit for awhile ;)
Aww-thanks Ti! :)
I’m pretty sure having a manifesto makes you a Communist, particularly when you combine it with a fist pump. Good heavens, Eva, WHAT has reading done to you? ;-)
Just kidding, of course! And you can ruffle my feathers any time. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
I try to hide it, but my true red shines through. ;)
great list eva ,you ooze books and put us all in the shade with your enthusaism ,warmest stu
Thanks Stu! I love the image of me oozing books. :)
Loved this.
Thanks! :D
Love what you’ve said here. You make me smile on a routine basis. It really comes down to reading what you want to, hopefully liking most of what you read, and blogging however you choose. That’s what puts the joy in both activities, isn’t it?
Thanks Suzi! :) Definitely, being true to yourself makes things joyful!
Hear, hear! I agree with every point!
Thanks Sakura! :)
Wonderful manifesto! I love how enthusiastic you are all about all things bookish, and most of all, being yourself.
Thanks Jeane!
Excellent, Eva!
Thank you JoAnn!
Amen, sister, especially the point about reading and blogging relativism- I enjoy having my schedule of posts, but it’s just what works for me, since you rightfully point out if you don’t want to, you don’t blog. It’s a hobby, after all! :)
I have a fuzzy schedule in the back of my mind, anchored by Sunday Salon and Library Loot, but I don’t adhere to it strictly. lol
You are too much and a joy at the same time. Lovely manifesto.
Thank you Kinna!
Ditto, mostly. ;–) I think you should make this a permanent page on your blog. One of those pages with its own little tab.
Thanks CB! Maybe I should link to it from my about page?
Love the manifesto, love your blog!
Thanks Kathleen! :)
Fantastic! You took the words right out of our mouths!
Thank you Vivienne!
GReat IDEA!!! I am going to come up with one too!
It’s great you spend time touching base with blogger friends.
I can’t wait to see your manifesto! :)
Yay for your manifesto! It really expresses the fun and joy of reading and blogging:)
Thanks Bina!
So cool. You’re just so well read and well spoken. :)
Aww; thank you Becky. :)
If only you could stand for election on that manifesto – you’d win by a landslide!
You’re too sweet Fleur!
What a refreshing guide to blogging. I totally enjoy the idea of being able to blog about…whatever! And to read only the books one chooses to read.
Healthy debate…nothing is more stimulating!
Cheers!
Thanks Laurel! :)
Refreshingly positive energy!
I love being positive about book blogging. :D After all, if I didn’t love it, I wouldn’t devote so much time to it! lol
Love this, Eva!
Thanks Vasilly!
Perfecto! PS: You inspired me to switch blogging platforms today!
Awesome Daphne! Welcome to WP! :D
Eva, you rock! Rvery time I see the author photos on your site I grin. Thanks for being here.
Thanks Gavin! :D I love the author photos too…I think of them as my little blogging guardian angels looking over me. hehe
Eva, you rock! Every time I see the author photos on your site I grin. Thanks for being here.
Your manifesto is much more readable than Karl’s. :-D
Well done!
I can’t WAIT to start seeing bronze busts of myself popping up. ;)
You are awesome, Eva. I’m so happy to be friends with you. :)
<3
I’m happy to be friends w/ you Heather! :D
Great post! My blog may slowly be turning into a book blog, and I liked reading why you choose to read and post the things you do. And as a fellow list-maker, I can relate to that too :)
Aren’t lists marvelous? And if you end up as a book blogger, welcome to the community! :D
Love it – Love it – Lyle Lovett! :)
lol!
I agree with you wholeheartedly on several of your points. Wonderful list!
Thanks Susan! :D
Alas, must I say it AGAIN?! Sure, why not… YOU ROCK. #luveva
Aww: right back at you! #luvcare
I love your manifesto and agree with it wholeheartedly! You rock!
Thanks Anna! :D
Eva, I really enjoyed reading your manifesto. Of course it did make me wonder if you were a communist :) Har, Har! Anyhow, I must admit that I am a fan of lists – I am always writing new ones- and after reading your list, I began to wonder if I should write a new one about my own personal goals for blogging (not to post or anything, but for myself). Thanks for the inspiration. Cheers!
We never know where a Commie might be hiding… lol!
I think having a personal goal list for blogging is a great idea. :)
Love this! Kind of makes me want to write one of my own but I agree with you on almost everything, so there’s almost no point.
Thanks Meghan! If you do end up writing your own, I’ll definitely be checking it out. :)
This is terrific and inspiring..keep up the great work!
Thanks Joemamma! :)
This is great, Eva. I’ve been inspired by your blog (especially your ‘about’ section, somehow your friendliness even in your introduction helped me relax about all this) ever since I’ve found it. Any advice or mentoring is fine by me! And thanks for being one of the first friends of my blog, it’s been nice to meet you.
Aww; thanks so much! If you ever need any advice, feel free to e-mail me. :D
Damn, now I want to write a manifesto!
I’m late to the party (as usual) — but good for you! Love this post. I don’t actually pay any attention to balance — I read what I want: old/new, male/female, literature/fluff, white/POC. When I added up my stats for 2009, I found that I read 50-50 male/female authors totally by chance.
I really need to learn to gush more — but I’m not a particularly gushy person. That’s probably why I don’t get 50 comments on my reviews. Oh well!
Thanks for letting me know it’s okay to not want to read sometimes. LOL!
