Library Loot: November 25-December 1, 2009

November 26, 2009

>library-lootLibrary Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by myself and Marg that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries!

Want to share your loot? Marg has the Mr. Linky this week.

No vlog this week: it’s Thanksgiving and things are a bit crazy around here.

The Sandman: Dream Hunters by Neil Gaiman (Ana told me on Twitter that I’d love this standalone ,em>Sandman book), The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery (Dewey’s Books Challenge), Sir Gawain and the Green Knight trans. Simon Armitage (Really Old Classics Challenge)

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, Absolute Sandman: Vol. Two by Neil Gaiman (I’m determined to enjoy this series eventually), The Vinter’s Luck by Elizabeth Knox (Maree and Vasilly convinced me to do a group read! hehe)

Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel (Spice of Life Challenge), The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley (Canada Challenge)

I handed The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie to at least two people at my library this week. I listened to the audio & loved Flavia de Luce! And I have an aunt who I will always remember gave me The Witch of Blackbird Pond when I was a kid (that and Tuck Everlasting). Great library haul, again! Happy reading & happy Thanksgivng!

Nice stack of books! I’ve read the Witch of Blackbird pond, and was surprised how much I liked it. The others are all new to me.

  3. November 26, 2009 7:41 am

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is wonderful. Enjoy!

  4. November 26, 2009 7:41 am

Ooh, there are a lot of those I can’t wait to see what you think of. I remember Jason reading Sir Gawain…

    • December 3, 2009 10:59 am

Sir Gawain is a reread for me: it’s so wonderful! :)

  5. November 26, 2009 7:49 am

These look like great books – I just finished The Graveyard Book and am trying to decide if I liked it or not!

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

    • December 3, 2009 10:59 am

Seriously?! I LOVED Graveyard Book. But that’s cool. ;)

  6. November 26, 2009 8:26 am

I really want to read The Sweetness on the Bottom of the Pie.

  7. November 26, 2009 8:57 am

Happy Thanksgiving! Excellent bunch of books – look forward to hearing your thoughts. :) By the way, if you do not care for Dream Hunters, do not become discouraged about the Sandman and decide that you aren’t going to read Season of Mists! Dream Hunters is not a favorite of mine.

    • December 3, 2009 10:58 am

I’m reading Season of Mists next, but I LOVED Dream Hunters! Maybe you read the book w/ the other illustrator?

I remember reading Sir Gawain in high school, but I don’t remember much about it other than really liking it.

I read Like Water for Chocolate this summer, and I’m still not sure what I think about it. I’m interested to hear your thoughts!

    • December 3, 2009 10:57 am

I read it for the first time when I was 10, and I’ve loved it ever since! :) This was my second time w/ Like Water for Chocolate, and I liked it a lot more this time around.

  9. November 26, 2009 1:43 pm

Happy Thanksgiving Eva. You have some fabulous books there. I really enjoyed Like Water For Chocolate, I hope you do too. I have wanted to read The Elegance of The Hedgehog for ages.

    • December 3, 2009 10:57 am

Like Water for Chocolate was a reread for me-I enjoyed it more this time around. :)

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Piet – what a glorious book title! Must read it.

Witch at Blackbird Pond was one of my favorite childhood books. It’s an oldie but a goodie!

    Happy Thanksgiving :)

    • December 3, 2009 10:56 am

The book lives up to the title! :) Witch of Blackbird Pond was one of my faves too.

  11. November 26, 2009 2:07 pm

Meant to type “Pie,” not “Piet.” Sheesh. And not even a drop of wine today ;)

  12. November 26, 2009 3:48 pm

    Enjoy your books!

  13. November 26, 2009 4:02 pm

Once again a great loot, Eva! I started reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog before my break from blogging. I liked it a lot, but did not have much time for reading during my break. Now I kind of want to read ALL my books at the same time, so, I’m still half way through that book!
Also, I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts on The Vintner’s Luck. I’ve seen the book in a bookstore.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Greetings,
    Tiina

    • December 3, 2009 10:55 am

Thanks! lol @ wanting to read all your books at once-I get that way sometimes too!

  14. November 26, 2009 8:34 pm

The Witch of Blackbird Pond is one of my favorite reads from childhood. My book club read it a few years ago but I missed the meeting and didn’t get around to reading it. It is on my shelves ready for a reread. Enjoy all the books! Happy Thanksgiving!

    • December 3, 2009 10:55 am

I loved it when I was little too. :)

  15. November 26, 2009 10:47 pm

Yay, Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie!!! :)

I checked out an audio version of that very same translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and it was fantastic. Although I’m sure it is great to read, it is the kind of thing that is so powerful when spoken by someone who can flow with it. If you have an opportunity to experience it on audio, please do. You’ll love it.

    • December 3, 2009 10:54 am

I LOVED this translation! I think the audio would be great fun-I’ll check if my library has it. As it is, I read the whole book out loud (was alone in the house).

  16. November 27, 2009 12:24 am

I’m interested in The Elegance of the Hedgehog and The Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie. I’m curious to see what you’ll say about Witch of Blackbird Pond…I didn’t read it until I was an adult, and I didn’t like it too much. I absolutely loved Like Water For Chocolate — both book and movie.

    • December 3, 2009 10:54 am

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie was a lot of fun! :) Like Water for Chocolate is a reread for me (I enjoyed it more this time around, but I still think I prefer the movie)…I loved Witch of Blackbird Pond when I was in elementary school, so I’ll be approaching it from a different angle.

  17. November 27, 2009 3:32 am

like water for chocolate is a miracle book. it’s luminous and fantastic! i hope you love it.

  18. November 27, 2009 3:58 am

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is just wonderful. I would recommend that to everyone and cannot wait for the next in the series.

I also must, must read The Elegance of the Hedgehog.

    • December 3, 2009 10:52 am

I can’t wait for the next one either!

  19. November 27, 2009 5:10 am

I loved Witch of Blackbird Pond when I read it in school. I really she reread it now as an adult.

Great stack of books. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    • December 3, 2009 10:52 am

I loved it in elementary school-I’m curious what I’ll think of it now!

  20. November 27, 2009 6:37 am

I’ve actually read most of the books in your library loot. I’m amazed! :) Like Water for Chocolate is a great book. I read it years ago in high school because it was required reading and loved it. You’re the second blogger to mention it this week. Maybe it’s time for a re-read.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is lovely. I had to read it last year for school. Starting to realize most of your library loot was required reading for me! Happy reading.

    • December 3, 2009 10:51 am

Like Water for Chocolate and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are both rereads for me! (I’m behind on my rereading resolution)

  21. November 27, 2009 10:24 am

I am yet to read any of the books u mentioned. I have my eyes on Elegance Of The Hedgehog. I am adding all these to my list. Have fun reading

  22. November 29, 2009 5:02 am

The Elegance of the Hedgehog always makes my eyes well with tears when I see it. It was the last book before she died that she convinced me to buy…and thus the last point she knew she earned in her big competition with Ana. She just cracked me up with how competitive she was with her “nemesis” Ana (all in fun, of course). Anyway, I haven’t been able to bring myself to read it yet. I so hope you absolutely love it.

    • December 3, 2009 10:51 am

I know it was the last book for Dew-that’s why I decided to read it. I’m sure it’s going to be difficult though. :(

I remember loving Like Water for Chocate when I read it many years ago. I saw it at a bookstore yesterday and thought that I needed to reread it.

  24. November 30, 2009 8:49 am

I think that these books sound fantastic. Happy reading. No library loot for me this week.

    • December 3, 2009 10:50 am

I don’t think I’ve gone a week w/o getting anything from the library except for when I was out of town!

  25. December 1, 2009 3:40 pm

Happy reading! I’m interested to hear what you think of the Barbery. I read this fairly recently… but I won’t give anything away.

    • December 3, 2009 10:49 am

I’m excited to see if I enjoy it! :)

  26. December 2, 2009 2:05 pm

I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Gawain as I am hoping to read that in the coming weeks!

    • December 3, 2009 10:49 am

It’s awesome! :) It was a reread for me, but a new translation, and I highly recommend it. I’m reviewing it tomorrow.
