A Bloggy Survey

June 25, 2009

I haven’t done a meme in ages!! Well, a real meme; not a weekly thing. So here you go. Started by Ms. Mazzola, I stole it from Nymeth and Daphne.

1. How long have you been blogging?
Since January 2007.

2. Why did you start blogging?
I wanted to join in reading challenges!

3. What have you found to be the benefits of blogging?
I’ve made some really, really close friends. And what I love is that these friends are all spread out geographically, and some lead such different lives from me, that I doubt we ever would have met without the internet. My bloggy friends are definitely more diverse in terms of background/life experience/etc. than my face to face friends. I also have discovered so many great books and authors thanks to bloggers. And thanks to reading challenges, I’ve expanded my reading so much…I’m much prouder of how I read now!

4. How many times a week do you post an entry?
This varies. For a good time, I was posting almost every day. Then no internet and life got in the way for a couple months. Now I’m hoping to get back to 5-7 posts a week.

5. How many different blogs do you read on a regular basis?
A lot. In addition to the book blogging community, which I’m an active part of, I also lurk at some fashion and travel blogs. I refuse to count them all, because it would horrify me.

6. Do you comment on other people’s blogs?

All the time on book blogs! :)

7. Do you keep track of how many visitors you have? Is so, are you satisfied with your numbers?WordPress used to have the stats graph in the dashboard, so I saw it every time I signed in. Now it isn’t there, and I check it maybe once a week. I’m not too concerned about my numbers, although when I was a ‘younger’ blogger, I checked them religiously. I’m much more into comments and bloggy friends! That being said, I’m exactly where I want to be; I have enough visitors/feed readers to feel like people care what I say, but any more and I’d just be overwhelmed.

8. Do you ever regret a post that you wrote?
No, but I try to avoid controversial things. Sometimes I’ll write a controversial post, sit on it for a couple days, and then decide it isn’t worth it.

9. Do you think your audience has a true sense of who you are based on your blog?

When I did my first vlog, several people told me I was exactly who they expected me to be. :) So in that sense, yes. But at the same time, my blog plays up my bookish tendencies and downplays my other ones. For instance, I’m not sure people know that I love watching movies and documentaries. And TV on DVD. Or that I’m a total clothes horse; clothes shopping calms me down faster than anything, and just like my TBR list, I have an ‘ideal closet’ list. There’s no way I’d leave the house without minimal make-up, and at least a bit of a hairstyle; I don’t think people who just know me from A Striped Armchair would realise that.

10. Do you blog under your real name?
I blog under my middle name. There are several reasons for that, the main one being that I love my middle name, and I’m thinking about going by it in non-internet life. (I would have switched over already, but I’m uncertain if it would cause confusion when my family and old friends know me by a different name than my new friends!) The other one being that I don’t tell my friends and family about my blog (except my mom and sister), and my first name has a pretty unusual spelling. Obviously, if anyone who knows me stumbles across the blog, they’ll immediately know who it is from the pictures and videos! hehe

11. Are there topics that you would never blog about?
My niece. I’ll never say her name, or include pictures or videos (I had to re-do my latest Library Loot vlog because she kept popping in!). My sister and I have discussed this, and we’re both just too nervous about her being on the internet, open to possibly creepy people (obviously not my regular readers!). Which is too bad, because she’s seriously one of the cutest kids ever. (As in, when we take her out, we get told she should go into modelling!) As I mentioned earlier, I also don’t blog about controversial stuff like religion, politics, etc. I just don’t think it’s worth it.

12. What is the theme/topic of your blog?

LOL: Bibliophilia

13. Do you have more than one blog? If so, why?
Nope. But this isn’t my first blog; I kept one when I studied abroad in Russia for my friends and family. I’ve since made it private, since I don’t like the idea of strangers reading it.

I agree that when I first saw your vlog, you were exactly how I pictured you.

I think the most exciting part of the book bloggy community is getting to know little things about them that aren’t book bloggy. It’s surprising how much non-book stuff people have in common too!

    :)
(and for the record, I may totally steal this!)

  2. June 25, 2009 11:11 pm

I think I’m going to steal this :p Actually I did know that you loved documentaries, TV on DVD, and had a clothes obsession :p I think you’ve mentioned that here and there. I totally agree with you about how lucky we are to have made some of these friends that we have here!! I truly feel blessed to know you Eva :) And I can’t BELIEVE that your first name isn’t Eva!!! LOL…I’m dying to know what it is now!

Ha! I started blogging for the challenges, too! And I’m glad you’re able to be around more often again. :-)

I hope you’re feeling much, much better!

I don’t mention my son’s name or put pictures of him up for the exact same reasons you mention. I do have a family blog with pictures of him but it’s private for family and friends.

It’s funny, I really started blogging for myself. Sort of an easy way to save “memories” for future scrapbooking. But now, while there are lots of reasons I continue, it really, truly is about the friendships for me. I swear I just can’t bear to think how horrible it would be if I didn’t have people like you and Chris and Ana in my life!!!

Hey Chris…I know Eva’s first name…what will you give me to tell you? LOL Seriously, Eva, your first name is very pretty too, but I don’t think I could ever not think of you as “Eva”…it just so totally suits you…beautiful, a tad mysterious, worldly.

  6. June 26, 2009 11:02 am

Wow, I didn’t know your first name wasn’t Eva either! I’m kind of shocked, because Eva fits you so perfectly. :) Now I’m super curious to know your first name….

You’re so cute! I’m actually jealous of your unintended blog vacation. I have been feeling a bit behind on life lately and know that things would be easier if I took a blog break. The thing is, like you, I would keep reading and I really do like talking about my books!

  8. June 26, 2009 2:46 pm

As ever, you are completely adorable! I love that you are a clothes horse in addition to being a book-o-holic.

  9. June 26, 2009 3:25 pm

This one is always fun to read and to get to know each other a little better!

  10. June 26, 2009 3:41 pm

Lena, thank you! And you should definitely steal it. :) I love connected with people over non-book things too.

Chris, steal away! And ok, apparently I’m not as secretive as I thought. :p

Lezlie, thank you! Since I’ve been eating gluten free, I do feel so much healthier.

Rebecca, I’m glad my sis and I aren’t the only ones!

Debi, I’m totally with you! And I find it hilarious you’re extorting Chris. :p Thanks so much; I love Eva too!

    Heather, aww thanks. :)

Kristen, thank you! Maybe designating one or two days a week as internet free will help?

Daphne, you’re so nice! I do loooove clothes; I might have to share a picture of my closet. :D

    Staci, thanks!

  11. June 26, 2009 8:48 pm

Now I’m REALLLLLY curious what your first name is :-) Lol, though, I understand why you don’t go by it.

I agree… the best part of blogging is the awesome friendships I’ve developed. I don’t have the time to make my blog as awesome as I’d like it to be, but I don’t let myself worry about that, I just keep in mind what a great community I’m a part of.

  12. June 27, 2009 8:47 am

This is a fun meme. Blogging has been such a life-changer that I’m always interested in processing the experience and reading about what other people are feeling about it. I think a ton of people find that community means more to them than they thought it would — it’s certainly true for me.

  13. June 27, 2009 6:58 pm

Kim, hehe! Yeah, sometimes I’m jealous of the gorgeously designed blogs, but I just don’t have the money lying around to self-host. Maybe one of these days. :)

Dorothy, you put it so well!

I loved doing this survey as well. It’s interesting to see why people starting blogging–both you and Nymeth started because of reading challenges! That came second for me. I agree that comments and blogging friends mean more to me than visitors. Visitors are nice, but I wish they’d stay longer! :)

A note on switching your name. Even though my switch was little (going from Tricia to Trish 10 years ago), my high school friends and family members still forget to drop the “a” It is confusing to them and they don’t understand why the change. Maybe it is different when you go by a completely different name, but my friends tell me–you will always be a Tricia. Funny because I don’t think of myself as a Tricia anymore. Sorry for the tangent!
