The Return of You Make My Monday! Awards

September 22, 2008

Hey You!!! Yeah You! You totally make my Monday!Remember how I mentioned last week that I really should start talking about how awesome all the bloggers in my blogroll are? Well, here we are on a Monday, and as I explained when I first thought up this award, since Monday’s are the worst day ever, I’m going to brighten them up by talking about some great blogs. :D (Please excuse the boring, ugly button. I wasn’t feeling very inspired last night!)

This Monday, I’m going to talk about three bloggers: Carl, Chris, and Nymeth. Why? Because all three just happen to be my favourite fantasy/sci-fi blogs….and while I’m not going to demand a recount or anything after last week’s festivities…..I just want them to know it! ;)

We’ll start with Carl. I mean, who doesn’t know Carl? He hosts two of the most popular challenges in the blogosphere: Once Upon a Time and R.I.P.! Not only do these have some of the coolest themes ever (fairy tales! ghosts!), they always involve tremendously generous prize packages and fun mini-challenges to get participants’ creative juices running. And they’re seasonal, which is just so neat. :) Carl is also an incredibly conscientious host: in addition to creating very picture and link heavy posts (which takes forever), I’m pretty sure he reads every single review every single participant writes for the challenges. And comments. And if all that weren’t enough, he’s an old-style patron of the arts, creating a scholarship, introducing all of us to wonderful Etsy artists, and just in general encouraging the creative side of human endeavours. He is a wonderful presence in the book blogosphere.

Next up is Chris! He feeds my poppet addiction by always linking to Lisa Snellings-Clark’s latest creations, but I forgive him. ;) He also was one of, no, actually, I think he just was the first book blogger I came across who had such an obvious passion for sci-fi and fantasy. I had been really into fantasy in high school, but completely lost touch with it (except for Neil Gaiman) by the time I began blogging. Chris made me remember what is so wonderful about the genre, and thanks in large part to him I’ve gotten back into it! (Well, the fantasy part. I’m still a hold out on the sci-fi aspects…) I’ve also discovered several new authors through him; he was even helpful enough to provide a list of non sci-fi Orson Scott Card books. Speaking of whom, the only reason I’ve picked up his books is that he’s Chris’ favourite author; that’s not something that happens very often, and it shows just how much I value Chris’ judgement. Have I mentioned his career? He works in the psychiatry field. I’m sure I couldn’t handle that kind of job, and I admire Chris for doing it. And despite all the things life has thrown at him this year, he still keeps up with the book blogging community; a thing I (and I’m sure many others) am grateful for. :)

Last but certainly not least is Nymeth! Let’s just put it out there: she writes the most convincing reviews ever. I’m sure that if she took it into her mind to review her television manual, I’d be pestering my library for it (maybe an ILL?)! Fortunately for me, all of the books she recommends are indeed awesome! The coolest thing about Nymeth, other than her gorgeous vacation pics, her many cats, and the fact that she and I have very similar short story taste, is that she’s Portugese. I mean, can you imagine reading and reviewing books in Portugese? Much less the most persuasive reviews in the blogosphere? Yeah-that’s what I thought. But as if all that wasn’t enough, she’s also an incredibly sweet and supportive person. :) She generously opens her giveaways to all around the world, she’s always there with the nicest comment, and she’s very active in community events. So there you go: charming, intelligent, kind, beautiful (as we know from her Harry Potter re-enactment photo, hehehe)…there’s a reason she’s one of my favourite bloggers!

Well, that’s it: my three favourite sci-fi/fantasy bloggers and what makes them such incredible people. And if you haven’t visited their blogs before for some crazy reason, you should probably go do that. ;) And stay tuned for next week’s edition…when you might be the very blogger that has made! my! Monday! (in my head, a deep-voice announcer guy was saying that last part)

Awwww, Eva :D This not only made my Monday, but my whole week! Thank you so much for your kind words. You put such a big smile on my face. And yay for Carl and Chris! Carl’s challenge hosting skills really are amazing. I don’t know how he does it! And Chris is just so enthusiastic and such a nice guy. I’ve lost count of how many great books I discovered because of him!

Nifty! And I want you AND Nymeth to know what I did today: I bought Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle! you both wrote great reviews. For some reason this title ALWAYS came to mind when I wandered Borders and this time I caved. Thank you both!

Holy crap, you certainly know how to make a person feel like they are worthwhile and amazing. Thanks so much for the wonderful thoughts and thank you even more for including me with two of my absolute favorite bloggers, Chris and Nymeth. They encourage me to keep going simply by what they do on their sites. Their participation, timely emails, and wonderful posts mean everything to me, as does support from people like you. Thank you so very, very much!!!

Oh Eva, this post was just the GREATEST!!! Because along with you, Nymeth, Chris, and Carl most definitely top my list of favorites. Yes, each one of your blogs are just incredible. Not just fun either, but I learn so much from all four of you. But more than anything else, it’s the people behind the blogs. I can think of no more genuine, truly kind and good people, than the four of you!

And dang, ain’t that the truth about Nymeth?!! I’ve told her before that I’d surely sit down and read the phone book if she recommended it. :)

    Wonderful, wonderful post Eva!

I love Nymeth’s blog! I read it regularly. Haven’t heard of the others, but I’ll check those out!

  11. September 23, 2008 7:51 pm

I love all three of these bloggers, too! You’re right that Carl puts on the most awesome challenges. And Nymeth’s reviews make me add so much to my wishlist! And I just admire Chris and all the strength he’s had throughout some difficult times.

This idea is so great, and so is your button! :) It’s not ugly or boring at all.

I gave you an award today…in honor of you being a California blogger now. Well, not just for that…but I had to come up with some sort of criteria!

Great idea for Mondays, Eva, and you did pick three of the best bloggers out there -but I have to agree with Chris and Daphne, you too are one of the ones I visit every time, so we’ll have to figure out a way to nominate you for the ‘you make my Monday’ (and every day) award!! :-)

Thank you for commenting! For a long while, my health precluded me replying to everyone. Yet I missed the conversation, so I'm now making an effort to reply again. It might take a few days though, and there will be times when I simply can't. Regardless, I always read and value what you say.
