Sunday? Already? Are you sure?

Look! Seals! How awesome is my new backyard?

Look! Seals! How awesome is my new backyard?

There just aren’t enough hours in the day, are there? I’ve barely done any reading (other than news, which is a whole different issue) since I got here. I knew this was coming, but it’s still been a painful adjustment. The books I brought with me with such high hopes are sitting on the shelves, just waiting for some attention. And I keep telling myself that once I settle into a routine (i.e.: once classes start), I’ll get back to whizzing through them. We’ll see.

Speaking of feeling overwhelmed, I have finally decided to just mark all the blog posts in my reader ‘read’ and begin afresh. It’s edging towards 1,000, and I’ve begun avoiding even looking at it because it seems such a big number! So by starting all over again, at least I’ll get back into the swing of things. :)

Yet another thing that is lowering my book reading time by increasing my internet time is the website FieldReport. I was a little skeptical, since it’s a site for writers, and I am most emphatically not one of those! But since I am a reader, it’s all good. What I think is neat is that the website is focused on creative nonfiction; essentially, essays, which are one of my favourite under-appreciated forms. As the homepage explains,

Share the true stories that have shaped your life and made you what you are. Be as public or anonymous as you like.

Want to see my favourite so far? It’s entitled “Water Your Books and They Will Grow” by user EloiseElaine. I just love humourous essays, and this one made me laugh out loud.

What’s even more neat, is that as a reader I can vote for the stories I like best! Imagine if the Pulitzer or Booker became that interactive. :D And if you’re a writer, you can add your stories to be read and voted on. And the contests come with monetary rewards, which is awesome. So, definitely go check out the website, but only if you have some time to spare.

Right: so I’ll be working on some bloggy admin stuff soon, and I hope to actually do a book review by Wednesday. Now I’m off to read what other bloggers are doing this fine Sunday. :D

I’ve just discovered FieldReport as well, and concur with your comments! I could spend a LOT of time over there… Hope all is going well with your settling in, etc.

FieldReport really is a cool site!

Hope things settle down for you soon, so you can that nose back in a book!

Field Report sounds awesome, but I am heeding your warning and only heading there when I have more time. Glad you’re enjoying that West Coast wildlife. . . . aren’t sea lions great? I love pelicans, too.

Hopefully you do get some reading time once you get settled into new routines (and a new place- with seals!).

The RSS programs do become overwhelming if you don’t log in for a while, don’t they? And field report is a great way to while away an hour or two (if you can limit it at that which a serial procrastinator like me can’t).

I’m going to look into that website. That looks so cool. And everyone needs more stuff to take up their time, right?

Melanie, thanks! And isn’t FieldReport fun?

Debi, I think things will definitely settle after awhile. :)

Andi, lol: definitely be prepared to spend some time there! The pelicans are super-cool, and I loooooove the sea otters. :D

Sarah, yep: blog readers can get crazy so easily! I also use mine to read the news, so it gets full real fast.

Nik, everyone definitely needs lots of procrastination tools! ;)

Good for you, staring fresh with your blog reading. Sometimes that just needs to be done. In fact, I used to have to do it with my checkbook when I forgot to balance it…

Welcome to California, Eva!! KEEP ME AWAY FROM FIELD REPORT. Thanks. I’ll never get any BOOKS read! ACK!

Love the photo of the seals, the water, the sea, that’s the Monterey I remember! We were docked in the marina for several weeks way back when I was on our sailboat (the mid-1970’s, so I can’t recommend any places to visit!), and i remember that sort of view all along California. I hope you are enjoying your view every day!!! As for Fieldreport – I am staying far away, for now. There aren’t enough hours in the day as it is!!!

Thank you for commenting! For a long while, my health precluded me replying to everyone. Yet I missed the conversation, so I'm now making an effort to reply again. It might take a few days though, and there will be times when I simply can't. Regardless, I always read and value what you say.
