The Mailman’s Been Busy…

October 30, 2007

There’s supposed to be a picture of books here, but I can’t figure out how to make a thumbnail in wordpress. :( Any users want to help me out?

I had a ton of books in the mail yesterday! (to be fair, I forgot to check the mail since Thursday) No less than two boxes and four envelopes. :) From the left, an omnibus of Ruth Rendell (The Secret House of Death, Shake Hands Forever, A Judgement in Stone) and Kissing the Gunner’s Daughter by the same. Together with Witching Murder by Jennie Melville, they constitute one of my prizes during the read-a-thon! Alison was kind enough to donate these-they’re all hardcover and in gorgeous condition. :)

After that is To the North, another Elizabeth Bowen I bookmooched since I loved The Last September. Next are numbers three and four in Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series. Along with Ex Libris by Anne Fadiman over at the end, they constitute the Amazon purchase I made with the gift certificate I won in the read-a-thon. :)

The Nabokov I decided to bookmooch after reading about it at several blogs, including Imani’s. (if you’ve also talked about it recently, let me know and I’ll link you as well) I’m excited, especially since I just finished Mansfield Park! And then there’s the first three (in publishing order) of C.S. Forester’s Hornblower Saga. I was planning on just mooching the first one, Beat to Quarters, for the upcoming Seafaring Challenge, but the bookmooch user also had these two, and she was a newbie. So I decided to go ahead and grab the first three. I think I’ll really enjoy them!

In other news, several of us are reading Daniel Deronda by George Eliot together. Go over to Pages Turned to find out everything. It’d be great if you joined in!

You might have noticed I’ve stopped Fast Food Nation Tuesdays. One of my friends, after hearing me talk about it forever, asked to borrow it. And he’s a slow reader. So, hopefully I’ll be able to resurrect it eventually.

I can’t believe tomorrow’s Halloween! I’m very excited. :D I’m also looking forward to doing my R.I.P. II wrap-up; I’ve read a lot of great books and short stories. Tomorrow, I’ll be discussing “The Monkey Paw” as well as the books I’ve read. We’ll see if I finish up Dinesen’s Seven Gothic Tales in time. :)

I love mail like that – I had 2 packages waiting for me yesterday. It’s especially sweet when the books are mooched, isn’t it!

Thank you for commenting! For a long while, my health precluded me replying to everyone. Yet I missed the conversation, so I'm now making an effort to reply again. It might take a few days though, and there will be times when I simply can't. Regardless, I always read and value what you say.
