Quick Penpal Post

January 14, 2009

Sorry about double-posting, but I didn’t want to put personal stuff in the Library Loot post. :) Anyway, the brilliant Emily had a great idea of pen pals last week, and she has given her blessing to steal it. So go read her post really quickly.

Back? Great! Here’s the passage that had me thinking “You’re so right, Emily!”:

It sounds as if they covered almost every subject imaginable, carried on “friendly” arguments with each other, and shared book recommendations. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Maybe I’m weird, but I want someone who will write letters like that with me.

Funnily enough, I’d been thinking about making a New Year’s resollution to write letters, but I was stymied as to who I’d exchange letters with. So glad Emily’s smarter than me! lol

I’m stealing her general outline, with one change

1) Choose 5 pen pals for 2009
2) Promise to write each pen pal a real letter at least once a month
3) Promise not to resort to email substitutions
4) Promise that you will get twelve genuine, pen-to-stationery letters in your mailbox from me
5) Write a blog post at the end of the year about my experiences with my pen pals

(I actually find it much easier to write letters than type them, hence my change to #4).

So, if you’d like to be my penpal (sudden thought: oh dear, I hope there isn’t a deafening silence following this post), you have to be willing to write me at least one letter a month as well. That’s the only requirement-I’m perfectly happy to mail letters abroad, to long-time readers or people who have never left a comment, to bloggers or non-bloggers. Like Emily, if I get more than five offers, I’ll do a random drawing. And if you don’t get drawn, I encourage you to simply do your own penpal post! We’re already saving the paper-based book, now maybe it’s time we save paper-based stationary. ;)

And if no one wants to be my penpal, I’ll totally understand (I know most of you have insanely busy lives)!

I love this idea! I WOULD want to be your penpal but I’ll actually be writing lots of letters this year anyway, so I don’t think I will have enough time to add one more person to my list. The reasons I’ll be writing more letters are that I have a friend who recently joined a convent (yes, she is actually going to be a nun, it’s strange to me too), my little brother left for the marines two weeks ago, and my husband and I sponsor a child in Kenya, and I write letters to all three of them.

So, fantastic idea, and I hope you get lots of people to be your penpals! :)

If you don’t mind if I occasionally write my letters using Word (my handwriting is just bad), I’d like to give it a try. I love getting letters in my mailbox :-)

Count me in! I love giving and receiving mail!

  4. January 14, 2009 10:12 am

That sounds like a wonderful idea…I’d be interested!

  5. January 14, 2009 10:16 am

If you don’t mind letters with lots of questions (because I can’t imagine what of interest I’d have to talk about), please throw my name in the hat. This really is a cool idea!

Hello! I’ve been reading and enjoying your blog for several weeks. I found it when Google Alerts let me know that you added my blog (Books, the Universe, and Everything) to your blogroll – thank you by the way!

I’d totally be willing to be a Pen Pal – I love writing letters and don’t have many people to write to (especially people who actually write back). I also love to talk about books, so it seems like a great combination. :)

  7. January 14, 2009 10:28 am

I’d be interested. I think I could come up with all sorts of random fun information to throw into a letter.

You must be reading my mind! I started a Yahoo Group for just this type of thing. If you’re interested, check it out!

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/booklovinpenpals/?yguid=355249252

I’d love to be your penpal:) We are going to do a book group and a Valentine’s exchange – these are just optional, no participation necessary. Hope to see you there:)

  9. January 14, 2009 11:11 am

I’d love to write to you! And I might actually want to steal this idea too! See if anyone wants to write to me!

  10. January 14, 2009 11:24 am

I’m up for it, but since you seem to have plenty of takers, you can just add my name to a possible pool of penpals!

  11. January 14, 2009 11:24 am

I’d like to be your pen pal!!
    :)

  12. January 14, 2009 12:45 pm

I love this idea. My handwriting is atrocious, though, so I kind of hesitate to inflict it on people :P If you don’t mind ugly handwriting, please throw my name in the hat!

  13. January 14, 2009 12:45 pm

I would love to be your penpal as well. Please throw my name into the hat.

Hugh Laurie plays Mr. Palmer in the same version as the one with Hugh Grant. He is awfully annoyed at his wife all the time and makes snarky comments about it. :D

  15. January 14, 2009 2:49 pm

Ooooh, pick me! I was going to throw one of these up on my blog (before my computer bit it) but then I realized that I’d have MULTIPLE pen pals, when I’m really only up for one or two. SO throw my name in your hat, and if you don’t pick me I’ll have to do my own pen pal pool.

  16. January 14, 2009 2:50 pm

I would be really interested in being your pen pal Eva – I used to have pen pals from all over the world when I was younger and I really enjoyed that exchange of letters and discussion – I quite miss the art of letter writing!

  17. January 14, 2009 2:59 pm

You already have more than enough volunteers, but if you ever want to exchange letters with a random book-a-holic Brit who stumbled across your blog just let me know! :)

  18. January 14, 2009 3:57 pm

I read your post just after it was published and was very intrigued by the idea. Unfortunately I did not respond right away and now you have far more than 5 responses — CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I was wondering if you would mind if I posted this idea on my blog as well? I would be certain to give credit to your blog, as well Emily’s Telecommuter Talk. I have never been a part of a book club, and I think this might fill that void in my life :)

Thanks for sharing this great idea!!

  19. January 14, 2009 4:25 pm

I’m slow to respond, but I’d do it too! Maybe you should take all your leftover and match us up!

  20. January 14, 2009 9:34 pm

So glad you decided to follow my lead! Bob thinks I ought to have you throw my name in your hat as well (he thinks you and I need to be pen pals, from what I’ve told him about you, and was disappointed I didn’t draw your name). I suppose it wouldn’t hurt me to have six, but it seems unfair to include me when you’ve got all these others who seem to want letters from you. Do what you think is best.

  21. January 14, 2009 10:42 pm

Fantastic idea!! No deafening silence on this post! I’d love to participate.

  22. January 15, 2009 12:58 am

This would be so much fun! I’ve been wanting to write letters lately too. In fact, I just bought a new fountain pen!! Definitely throw me in the hat…and I just left you a really long response on my blog :p

Heather, wow-a nun and a Marine and a Kenyan child! Those are some cool penpals. ;) You might enjoy My Life With the Saints, since it kind of made me want to be a nun (just a little bit, though).

Marny, great-I’ll put you in the drawing!

Softdrink, great-I’ll put you in the drawing!

Debi, you are one of the most interesting bloggers out there. :p So there. (lol)

Emily, great-I’ll put you in the drawing! (and it is much better when people right back!)

Corvus, great-I’ll put you in the drawing!

Amateur de Livre, very cool-I’ll check out the Yahoo Group soon (and probably post about it on my blog).

    Lena, great-and steal away. :)

Daphne, great-I’ll put you in the drawing!

Lu, great-I’ll put you in the drawing!

Nymeth, lol-I bet your handwriting isn’t as bad as you think. ;)

Beastmomma, great-I’ll put you in the drawing!

    Lu, ohhh-I’m so dumb sometimes!!

Raych, great-I’ll put you in the drawing!

Karen, I used to be penpals with my friends, because I kept moving, but I never did the international penpal thing. I wish I had!

Z, lol-I’ll put you in the drawing!

Molly, of course you can do this too!

Lisa, great-I’ll put you in the drawing! And I can either play ‘penpal match-maker’ or you guys can all just do your own drawings too. :)

Emily, awww-Bob seems like my kind of guy! ;) I’ll definitely put in the drawing.

Monnibo, lol-yeah, instead of worrying about deafening silence I should have been worried about the opposite. Now I’m wishing I could be penpals with everyone!

Chris, ohhh-a fountain pen! I’ve been coveting one of those for awhile now!

  24. January 15, 2009 12:06 pm

I think this is a great idea. Way back when I was in HS had a few penpals, of which one lived in Jordan. He actually recently found me again after our being out of touch for at least 20 years!

Since you’ve had so many responses to this post, maybe you could match up the “leftovers” if the other commenters are interested in that idea!

I always loved to get mail in college. It was the highlight of my day. Not much has changed except for the fact that some of the mail is in the form of bills. I would love to be a pen pal!

  27. January 15, 2009 3:25 pm

Me too, please! I’d love to correspond with you, Eva! Can you put my name in the drawing?

  28. January 16, 2009 10:48 am

I love that you apologize for double posting! Geesh!

  29. January 16, 2009 1:05 pm

Valeria, how neat! And of course I’ll match up the left-overs if that’s what y’all want. :)

    Celina, sounds good!

Aria, I know-in college mail was the best. Especially care packages. :D

    Susan, great!

Jessica, lol-I think more than one post a day is mildly obnoxious…like that kid whose hand was always up first in class. ;)

  30. January 17, 2009 9:25 am

Heck, you’ve already had so many responses, so I am going to trawl around to see others who are asking for penpals, as I love the idea :)

  31. January 17, 2009 12:01 pm

I’ve been pen palling for over 20 years now. I do less of it today than I did when I was younger, but it’s something I’ve never tired of. I wish you luck with meeting your goal and hope you get to know some wonderful people.

  32. January 17, 2009 6:33 pm

I used to have quite a few pen pals… Actually, that’s how my husband and I met! It was so much fun but you know how it goes… I wonder what happened to my other pen friends sometimes. Anyway, I’ll refrain from joining in right now but if you do another call for pen pals later in the year I may join in :) Have tons of fun!

  33. January 18, 2009 4:52 am

Louise, feel free to do your own post!

    Literary Feline, thank you. :D

Iliana, that is such a neat story about you and your husband!!

Hi Eva, I was wondering whether you’ve started writing letters already. If you’re too busy right now, mail me your address and I’ll start by sending a letter to you :-)
