A Striped Armchair

Sunday Salon: the Short Post

Posted by: Eva on: October 5, 2008

The Sunday Salon.comI’ve been so crazy-busy this week, and will continue to be until next Wednesday, that there’s no time for a leisurely summing up, lol.

I only read two books this week: one in paper, one on audiobook. But the paper one, A Fine and Private Place by Peter S. Beagle, marks my 200th book read this year!!! And it was such an incredible, amazing, beautiful book. I highly recommend it to everyone. The audiobook I finished listening to was Possession by A.S. Byatt. It was a reread for me, and it was really neat to listen to it instead of read it. I did read all of the poetry/excerpts the first time round, but the narrator had a wonderful ear for poetry that made it really come alive. Also a great book that’d I’d recommend to everyone, but more of a project that the Beagle, if you know what I mean.

There you have it, possibly the first example on this blog of me actually being brief when talking about books. Oh, and two housekeeping-ish notes: there will be another draw for Anatomy of a Boyfriend soon, since Tara hadn’t intended to enter. ;) And, if you want to read the password protected ‘date review,’ just leave me a comment letting you know and I’ll send out an e-mail. I want to reiterate that I’m not trying to lock out my regular readers, just random prying eyes! ;)

I hope everyone had a great weekend, and hopefully after Wednesday I’ll be able to get a review done that does justice to the Beagle.

You and I need to form a club…Obsessive Readers, perhaps? I’m happy to say I’ve read more than 200 books this year, too.

yay, you loved it :D I can’t wait for your review.

And congrats on reaching 200 books!

I’ve had Possession on my TBR list for so long – I need to get to it soon; I’ve heard only good things about it.

Holy cow! 200 books so far this year? Do you sleep? ;)

Wow… 200 books! And I thought I was a decent quick reader. Possession is also in my piles of books I want to read.

Short but sweet! You do realize that you’ve read almost four times as much as me so far this year :p I REALLY want to get A Fine and Private Place. It sounds incredible. I’ll get it soon! And I want that password! ;)

200 books this year *Woot* That is amazing Eva!

I’ve never heard of A Fine and Private Place before, but when I looked up the synopsis it sounds awesome. Can’t wait for your review :)

200 books! Holy crap! AND you’re in school!

Congrats on the 200th!

You’re ahead of Mandi at 200 Books!

That number boggles my mind…

You definitely have my respect with being able to read 200 books in less than 10 months! Wow! I would love to hear about your date…

I thought I was doing pretty well with my meager 93 books read this year. Wow – you put me to shame, shame, shame. How in the world did you manage to read that many??

I would love to hear about your date as well …

Congratulations on 200 books! That is wonderful news! Something to try to live up to, even.

What was the audiobook that you read?

Happy Two Hundred Books Milestone! Now *that* is really incredible Eva. :)

How ’bout a glass of champagne? Cheers!

Sadly, I’ve only finished my 84th book…maybe, when I’m not teaching full time, I’ll be able to do more. I never know how you (and Becky) are able to get so many read!

I love Possession; I’ve read it several times, but I think listening to it on audio would be a good idea. Especially for all the poetry bits.

Debiie, hehe! I don’t think I count as an obsessive reader anymore: my book count has gone waaaaay down since starting grad school.

Nymeth, I totally loved it!!

Carrie, it’s a graet book. :)

Stefanie, hehe: I don’t think I’ll be reading nearly as much now that I’m at grad school.

Chris, it’s not quantity but quality. ;) And you have that little thing called a real job…

Joanne, thanks! It is really good; don’t worry-my review will be all gush. :D

Lisa, see: I wasn’t in school for most of the year. Now that I’m in school, I’m just not that cool anymore. ;)

Nik, thanks!

Bybee, it boggles my mind too!

Erin, thanks! I don’t have your e-mail addy or blog address.

Susan, no shame here! It’s because I had no life earlier in the year, lol…I mean, I worked about 35 hours a week but my niece napped a couple hours a day. And I had a couple close friends, but no boyfriend or anything. That gives you some spare time!

Lena, thanks! Possession was the audiobook.

Matt, thanks!! Are you going to share some of your free champagne from your fancy airline seat? hehe

Bellezza, see all of my other comments: now I’m so busy I barely get anything read!

Holey moley–falling back in chair from exhaustion! Actually kudos to you for reading so many books–I wish I was just a little bit speedier. How do you choose a favorite with so many?!

I’ve wanted to read Beagle’s A Fine and Private Place for years, but have never gotten around to it. Possession is an old favorite, and I like the idea of listening to an audiobook for a re-read!

200 books – I think I just fainted! That’s so wonderful.

200 books this year!?! Whoa! I’m so impressed and completey jealous. ;)

And send me that password! I’ll have to live vicariously through you when it comes to the dating.

200!!! Whoa!!!

It is interesting to listen to books as rereads, isn’t it. Depending on the skill of the reader, of course, I find it a very enriching experience to hear a book being read after I have experienced it for myself in my own inner voice. I especially like it when authors read their own work because you get a better sense of how they saw certain scenes, etc. based on the manner in which they read them.

Date review for me, please!

Wow 200th book, that’s impressive! And it’s only early October. Maybe you’ll skid in with a 300th book on New Year’s Eve? ;)

It’s good to hear Possession was good as an audiobook, because I’ve been wanting to listen to one on my ipod while I hike. But I’m so fussy about the readers! So I’ll see if my library has this one.

“I only read two books this week”…oh man, how that cracked me up…wish I could say such a thing! Seriously, I don’t know how you do it, my dear girl! And 200th book…sheesh…you are so my reading idol! (Especially knowing how much “heavy” stuff you manage to get read!)

Oooh, and do share the date story, please! You know, need to judge for myself whether this guy is good enough to be dating our Eva. :-)

Congrats on your 200th book read for this year! AWESOME.

I have a Fine and Private Place! But two others by him i have to read first……so please give us a good review soon!! :-) when you have time, between school, dating and READING 200 books this year! I bow, I salaam, I curtsy, you are the Goddess of Reading Books! :-) I salute you, Eva!!!!

Hey reading fiend. I was trying to catch on my feeder and I see I don’t have the magic word. I’d like it if you please.

Shadow of the Silk Road by Colin Thubron
This is the first book I've read by Thurbon. I love his intellectual, distinctly British tone.
Country of My Skull by Antjie Krog
It's gotten a lot more depressing, but it's the kind of depressing that's necessary. Krog is a journalist and a poet, which I think explains the unusual style. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it's effective.
Portrait of a Lady by Henry James (on CD)
I'm So Mad at Isabel right now. So mad. And annoyed with James; I just don't buy that she'd reject an awesome guy and then accept a horrid one. Hmph.
The Arabian Nights, trans. by Husain Haddawy and The Arabian Nights:a Companion by Robert Irwin
I've stalled on reading the Companion, since it's now full of literary criticism (not my favourite topic), but I'm still enjoying The Nights! I've only got 150 pages left.
Children of the Night ed. by Gloria Naylor
I lost this one for awhile! But I've found it, so I should get back into the stories soon. :)

In Loving Memory
