A Striped Armchair

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety Jig

Posted by: Eva on: July 20, 2008

I had a wonderful vacation! It was so nice to see all of my family again, and I won $130 in bingo! Of course, my mom and I had agreed to split our winnings, but that’s still exciting. :D

I’ll be catching up with all of your comments and blog posts in the next couple of days. For now, I’d just like to point out that someone teased me about saying I was ‘only’ bringing five books for a week long vacation. Well, I ended up finishing all of them by Wednesday (I was already over halfway through Legerdemain), so when we were at Barnes & Noble, I picked up Virginia Woolf’s The Voyage Out. But then I finished that yesterday morning, so before my mom dropped me off at the airport she kindly brought me back to B&N where I got a biography of Mary Queen of Scots from the bargain table (I’m about two hundred pages in, and really enjoying it!) and the third in Donna Leon’s Comissario Brunetti series, Dressed For Death. Oh, and as a note to mystery series publishers, there should always be a list of the series in publication order somewhere in the book! I ended up having to go through Leon’s books one by one looking at the publication year to figure out which one was the third.

I’m not sure how I got so much reading done. I promise I spent a lot of time with family-I really only read a bit in the mornings and then for about an hour before bed, but I guess most of the books were so well written they flew by. ;)

And now I’m off to finish Ghost Wars so I can go to the library. I decided it was worth the ten cents a day to be able to finish it, but of course I feel guilty, lol. I wasn’t allowed to renew it, which means someone has it on their hold list and is probably longingly waiting for its return. I’m soooo close, so I’ll be able to return it this afternoon. Promise!

Glad to hear you had a great time with your family! Your mom is so good for taking you back to B&N for books :)
OH and I so agree with you that publishers NEED to put a series # somewhere on the book. That is one of my biggest pet peeves with mystery books.

Welcome back! Missed you muchly. I’m glad you had a nice time, and what a reading week!

It’s always difficult to know how many books to take away with you, isn’t it? Last year I took a week-long vacation in Italy and I took 10 books with me. I did not expect to finish them all, but I was frightened of being stuck in a place where English language books did not exist! As it turned out, I read 7 — one a day — which wasn’t bad going. I am off on a week’s vacation next Sunday and I am already trying to figure out how many books — and which ones — I should fit in my suitcase.

I have a book on reserve at the library–it was due two weeks ago! Part of the problem is that our library charges per week overdue: no incentive to return it after one day; might as well wait a week and finish it. (I think it’s Aus$1.90)

Of course, that’s nice when I’m overdue because then I can keep it a week instead of one day and the penalty is the same…

“Oh, and as a note to mystery series publishers, there should always be a list of the series in publication order somewhere in the book! I’ve had to do that on more than one occasion myself, and it’s really quite irritating!

Welcome home!

Welcome back, and congrats on your big bingo win! You must read at warp speed. No way could I ever read that fast, though I sure wish I could.

Glad you had a great vacation, and congrats on the winnings! Five books in less than a week, that’s amazing. I had similar problem–ran out of books to read about halfway through my stay in Hong Kong, but that’s half a month! :)

Wow, everything’s impressive….your reading, your bingo winning…

$130!? That’s big bingo winnings. Congrats!

Glad to hear you had a good time — spending time with family, reading great books and winning money! I LOUDLY second your note to publishers regarding series. I absolutely hate it when you have to investigate to find out the order of books in a series. It should ALWAYS be in the front of each book.

Iliana, my mom is definitely good! And I don’t understand why publishers don’t list the series numbers-it’s so weird!

Andi, thank you!

Kimbofo, it is difficult! Especially with these new checked luggage rules. :( Good luck trying to decide!

Rebecca, that’s weird that your library does week charges. Mine only charges ten cents a day, so there’s not too much of an incentive to hurry, lol.

Debi, I definitely hate it! B&N shelves mystery series by title, which just seems silly to me.

Tara, thanks! Depending on the book, I do read pretty quickly. :)

Matt, well it was nine days, so a little more than a week! And I’m still jealous of your Hong Kong trip. :D

Bybee, thanks!

Nik, I know-I was super excited, lol.

Lisa, I’m not sure why publishers haven’t figured that out-some do the list, some don’t. Maybe some aren’t mystery readers, so they don’t realise the importance of series order?

Sounds like a great trip, Eva! I still think you must be a super fast reader :)

I really enjoy Donna Leon’s books too – and completely agree about the need for a chronological list!

Eva, despite not finishing all those books, you still are a great blogger. I’ve nominated you for an award here.

Participate in tagging others if you like or not, but either way, you deserve awards for your blog. You are truly one of my favorites.

Wow, you must be a fast reader! I’m glad you read so much – I love reading all your thoughts and reviews.

Okay, I’m glad someone else feels the way I do about series’ lists – the books should ALWAYS be listed in order somewhere in EVERY book in the series. It’s so annoying when you can’t find a list. I use this site when I can’t figure it out for myself – http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk .

Anyway, welcome home!
