So this week Dewey has asked us about magazines! I don’t read a lot of magazines, but I’ll talk about the ones that I do.
Oh, and they have store that sells really cute stuff (I covet the umbrella). Now they have an audio download available, which is just awesome! I mean, audiomagazines? And the readers’ accents always make me smile.
I began reading it regularly when I got a subscription for Christmas ‘05; right now, I’m reading my mom’s subscription. Yay for freeriding!
When I go to Barnes & Noble and want to read magazines, I go for Vogue, Yoga Journal (I love yoga, and I’m always impressed by the poses the cover models display, but all of the ads seem very sketchy), and whatever girly magazines look interesting that month (Marie Claire, Allure, etc.). I know people tend to have strong opinions about these kinds of magazines: personally, I like fashion and I like playing with make-up, so I read them for new ideas in those areas. They don’t really affect my self esteem, because I know the pictures are touched up and the lifestyle advice is often just silly! I think as long as you read those kinds of magazines as fantasy, you’ll be fine. However, some days I feel in a more intellectual mood, and then I grab Foreign Affairs which is an every-other month publication (mainly for international relations geeks). It includes thoughtful essays on various international topics: right now they have an essay by our Secretary of State (Rice) that is free for reading on their website. Which, you know, is kind of important. Ok-off the soapbox now!
Megan subscribes to a bunch more magazines than me, so her post was more interesting.
YJ is a great magazine. I don’t read it regularly but sometimes I do pick it up… especially when I need a reminder about following my own yoga practice
At Borders, I always take a table at the coffee shop, grab a big sweet coffee drink thingy, and plow through a ton of magazines. BTW, my yoga teachers says that most of the people in Yoga Journal, which I read regularly, are not actual yogies, just models who are really flexible. That always makes me feel better when I can’t get the bottom of my foot to touch the top of my head.
I read Foreign Affairs in college, but I guess I should be more well-read and informed now. It amazes me how clueless I am these days…..I don’t know anything about economics, so The Economist sounds above me….But I love the idea of listening to those magazines!
I love that you love the Economist. I was an International Studies major (oh so many eons ago) and was so into economics and politics that I read the Economist and the Wall Street Journal like it was candy. I’ve calmed down a bit
but I love picking up the Economist when I go to the airport or into Lausanne (my village kiosk doesn’t carry it – hah, go figure! But to be fair, they do sell newspapers in at least six different languages, plus the Int. Herald Tribune and the wonderful Geneva paper Le Temps – so I shouldn’t make fun) I didn’t know about the audio version though so I will check that out right away! Thank you
I’m not really a weekly geek but I think I might post on the journals I do read, just for fun!
I swear I wrote my post about those kinds of magazines before I read this!
