This is coming to you from the San Antonio Public Library, Tobin branch. Which is right next to a middle school. The guys using the computers next to me are of the middle/high school hormonal variety, and they’ve been surfing some kind of site that has lots of girls on it and evaluating them all. Loudly. And I’ve already used fifteen of my allotted sixty minutes, after which I have to wait half an hour before even putting my name on the wait list again. Which is a roundabout way of saying that there will not be a review today-I didn’t expect it to be so difficult to blog at the library. Tomorrow, I’ll come prepared with a hand-written review that I can just type up! I can’t really use the computer at my sister’s, because while she’s feeling better, she’s now even more behind in homework (have I mentioned she’s crazy brilliant at science? she wants to be a physician’s assistant, and she got into the PA school via an early admission program that only accepts something like 8 people out of 3,000 applicants!) so she needs that computer. But it’s cool, because it turns out this library has a really cool sign in the shape of a book that I plan to photography tomorrow!
I really need to work on my rambling, lol. But for now, I want to mention somethings before I forget them! First, the book about St. Petersburg is called Sunlight at Midnight and was published posthumously (he died during the pub process) by W. Bruce Lincoln. Apparently, he was a big expert on Russia, because there’s a long list of other titles he wrote in the beginning of the book. So as long as I enjoy it, I’ve got a whole new non-fic author to look for!
Secondly, even though this is a bit late, the March edition of the Bookworms Carnival is up over at Myrthe’s! Go check it out.
For April, the theme is Latin American lit and authors (good thing I just read some Marquez, huh?), the host is Reading in the Louvre (maybe I should change my blog name to Reading in the Hermitage?), and the deadline is April 13th (just two days after my birthday!). She’s provided an information page for all of you thinking about submitting.
Since today’s Monday, I get to spotlight one of my favourite blogs! This week, I’m going with Matt’s A Guy’s Moleskin Notebook. Matt and I have a lot of favourite authors in common, which is awesome, and he always leaves interesting and nice comments! Moreover, he’s originally from Hong Kong, and his occasional posts about Asian topics are always interesting. Right now, he’s on a trip to Asia, and I can’t wait to see all of the great photos I’m sure he’ll post. So if you haven’t stopped by his blog before, you ought to!
Finally, there’s the Once Upon a Time II Challenge! Honestly, I turn my back for one week and I’m behind, lol. I really enjoyed doing this challenge last year, so I’m jumping on the bandwagon again. There are various ways to participate, but the main thrust is to read fantasy/fairy-tale type books between March 21st and June 20th. I’m choosing Quest One (because I’m too lazy to hunt for books that fit the different categories-folklore always seems to stymie me), and my five books are: The Grand Tour by Caroline Stevermer and Patricia Wrede (and it’s in my trunk, so I can start on it!), The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale (I’ve heard great things about this one, and my library has it), Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees (I bought this after reading Neil Gaiman’s recommendation, but I haven’t gotten around to actually reading it), Enchantment by Orson Scott Card (since it didn’t work for the sci-fi experience, but as an Eastern European retelling of Sleepign Beauty, it definitely works here), and Dreams Underfoot by Charles de Lint (only appropriate, since I discovered him during last year’s Once Upon a Time Challenge!).
To round things out, here are three awesome things that have happened to me in the book blogosphere world in just the couple days I’ve been back:
That made my week!
So funny that you’re blogging from the public library! I just finished my own trips to the library to blog, but now we have managed to hook up a extra computer, so at least I now have the internet at home (our computer crashed). I didn’t manage to type up a review from the library either, not exactly the best conditions. I’ve been enjoying your blog via my reader but not sure if I’ve ever commented, so I thought it was about time I said hello!
I don’t blame you for having trouble blogging in the library. When I sit down to write a review, it usually takes me some time, and I normally get up to do other things in between finishing it. That would definitely be a challenge! But at least you get to check in and say hi.
I’m pretty sure I have to join the Once Upon a Time challenge, but the book reviews I’ve been writing tonight have sapped me of all energy to organize a reading list or post more.
Hope everything continues to go well:-)
I love fantasy/fairy tale stuff, so thanks for mentioning the challenge – and my blog, too.
Book is going in the mail tomorrow.
A
Yay, you’re in!!!
I had to laugh, I bought Lud in the Mist for the same reason you did and haven’t read it yet either. Some day, some day. Maybe during the challenge but I’m not keeping my fingers crossed.
I’m doing the same thing with De Lint as my first De Lint was during last year’s challenge. I’m thinking of stopping by the bookstore tomorrow and picking up a copy of his latest YA book, Dingo, that just came out. The cover looks wonderful.

I hate to check emails or post anything on blogs anywhere other than home because you just don’t have the privacy! But I agree with you about writing up the reviews in advance and typing them at the library… helps to save up all the time.
Glad to hear your sister is feeling much better!
Thanks for the shout-out about the Carnival, Eva! And for the links. I am at work now and don’t have too much to do so this will be a nice way to spend my time.
Thanks for promoting the Carnival, Eva! And for providing me with a nice way of spending my time with all the links. I am at work now and don’t have too much to do.
Sorry for the double comment. My first comment didn’t appear, so I wrote it again. And then there were two!
I’m sorry the library was so trying for you! At the library where I work I am willing to say a word to Internet users if they are bothering other people (but sometimes I’m unaware of it). Maybe you could ask a librarian to say something? People are usually fairly cooperative. But anyway, welcome back! I hate being deprived of my Internet connection – I start to get the shakes after a while…
yay for Lud-in-the-Mist and The Goose Girl and Enchantment! I want to read Dreams Underfoot at some point too.
I’m glad your sister is doing better. Enjoy the rest of your time there!
I’ve got a bashed-up copy of Reading Literature Like a Professor on my TBRs, near the top. You’ll probably beat me to reading, so I’ll look forward to reading your thoughts. Welcome back! Sorry about the noisy library teens. How annoying.
Musings, thanks for the rec! I hope I enjoy Lud-in-the-Mist too.
Maw Books, thanks for commenting! I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog, and I’m glad you finally have home computer access. So much better.
Kim L, I tend to write my reviews all in one sitting, but I like to have a cup of tea next to me, and to be in a comfy chair. The library stool=pain. I hope you do the Once Upon a Time challenge!
Carl, that is funny-I bet Nymeth and Chris have it too! And yay for de Lint encores.
Melody, I didn’t even think about the privacy, but that’s true. Of course, at home my mom likes to ask what I’m doing all the time. lol
Myrthe, no problem! It seems like a great carnival.
Nymeth, I thought you’d approve! I just read The Watermelon King last night and it was so awesome.
Nancy, it wasn’t the noise so much as their comments about girls that got to me, lol. The security guard told them to quiet down, but since I was right next to them I could still hear.
Chris, awesome-I love reading books with other people! And yay for Eva books.
I’ve read The Grand Tour pre-blogging days, I enjoyed it! It’s funny and sweet
I’m reading Enchantment for another challenge, so i”ll let you know when I’ve read it! I’m glad you’re in the Once Upon A time Challenge, so am I.
Your sister sounds interesting but too bad she doesn’t read! (always a flaw in my opinion…..even if they are perfect!) I hope her schooling goes well too
Thanks for the title about St Petersburg, now I can look for it here too! And what a nice surprise from Katrina for you….hope you are enjoying the sun, we still have 3 feet of snow on the ground here!!

Oh, I hope you enjoy Lud-in-the-Mist! I read it last year and I loved it; it is very strange. Can also recommend ‘The King of Elfland’s Daughter’ by Lord Dunsany for unique fantasy. I have really read nothing else like it.
